What to Wear on a Desert Safari
A desert safari is a staple of any Dubai itinerary. You will likely spend the afternoon aggressively bouncing over massive sand dunes in a 4x4 (dune bashing), followed by camel riding, sandboarding, and an evening barbecue under the stars at a Bedouin-style camp. It is an active, dusty, and temperature-shifting experience. Here is how to dress for it.
1. Breathable, Loose Layers
The desert sun is punishing in the afternoon, but the temperature can drop significantly once the sun goes down. You need lightweight, breathable fabrics (like linen or thin cotton) that cover your skin to protect it from sunburn and the abrasive sand. A loose linen button-down shirt paired with lightweight jogger pants is an excellent combination. Do not wear tight jeans or synthetic activewear, as you will quickly overheat in the 4x4 vehicle.
2. The Footwear Dilemma
You will be walking on deep, soft sand.
- Sandals/Flip-flops: These are the easiest to slip on and off if you want to walk barefoot in the sand (which feels amazing), but they offer no protection during dune bashing or sandboarding.
- Sneakers: These are safer for the activities, but they will inevitably fill up with sand, which can be irritating. The Best Compromise: Wear comfortable sneakers for the dune bashing and sandboarding, but throw a pair of cheap flip-flops into your day bag to wear once you arrive at the evening camp.
3. Protect Your Head and Face
The sun glares off the white sand, and the wind constantly whips fine dust into the air.
- Sunglasses: Essential. Polarized lenses are highly recommended.
- Scarf (Keffiyeh): You can buy a traditional checkered scarf (Keffiyeh or Shemagh) from a souk beforehand, or often from the safari drivers. It is the best way to protect your neck from the sun and, when wrapped around your face, keeps the sand out of your mouth and nose.
- Hair Ties: If you have long hair, tie it up. The wind during dune bashing with the windows down will turn loose hair into a tangled, sandy mess in seconds.
4. Don’t Forget a Jacket
The desert cools off rapidly after sunset. While you will be sweating at 4:00 PM, you will likely be shivering by 8:00 PM during the belly dancing performance. Pack a lightweight fleece or a denim jacket to throw on over your linen shirt for the evening.
