A Cyclist’s Guide to Berlin

Berlin is sprawling, incredibly flat, and boasts an extensive network of dedicated bike lanes. Without a doubt, the best way to experience the city is on two wheels. Renting a bike (via apps like Nextbike or Tier, or from local rental shops) gives you the freedom to easily hop between neighborhoods like Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain, and Neukölln. Here is how to prepare for a cycling trip in Berlin.

1. The Crossbody Bag or Small Backpack

Riding a bike through city traffic requires you to have your hands completely free and your center of gravity balanced. Do not try to cycle while carrying a tote bag or a heavy shoulder bag that might swing forward and disrupt your balance. Pack a high-quality, lightweight backpack or a secure crossbody bag that can be tightened snugly against your chest or back. Make sure it’s large enough to hold a water bottle, a light jacket, and any small souvenirs you pick up along the way.

2. Weather-Resistant Outerwear

Berlin’s weather is notoriously unpredictable, especially in the spring and fall. You might start a bike ride in brilliant sunshine and find yourself caught in a sudden downpour 20 minutes later. Always carry a lightweight, packable rain jacket. A windbreaker is also incredibly useful, as cycling across the vast, open expanses of Tempelhofer Feld (an abandoned airport turned public park) can get very windy.

3. Practical Footwear

You don’t need professional cycling shoes, but you do need practical footwear. Avoid sandals with loose straps, flip-flops, or shoes with slick soles that could easily slip off the pedals. Your best bet is a reliable pair of rubber-soled sneakers.

4. Knowing the Rules

Berliners take cycling seriously, and so do the police.

  • Never cycle on the sidewalk unless a sign explicitly allows it; stick to the bike lanes (usually painted red) or the road.
  • Use hand signals before turning.
  • Don’t check your phone while riding (it carries a hefty fine).
  • Make sure your rental bike has functioning lights if you plan to cycle after dark; it is strictly required by law.
