What to Pack for Rome in Summer
Rome in summer is spectacular, but it can get very hot, with temperatures often soaring above 30°C (86°F). Surviving the Roman heat requires strategic packing. Learn which fabrics work best for staying cool while looking stylish as you explore the ancient city.
1. Breathable Fabrics Are Essential
When packing for Rome in July or August, stick to linen, light cotton, and moisture-wicking materials like lightweight merino wool. Avoid polyester at all costs, as it traps heat and will make you sweat profusely. Loose-fitting linen trousers or flowy midi dresses are perfect for keeping air circulating while still looking elegant enough for an evening aperitivo.
2. Comfortable, Cobblestone-Ready Footwear
You will walk a lot in Rome—often 15,000 to 25,000 steps a day. The city center is covered in ‘sanpietrini’ (traditional cobblestones) which are notoriously difficult to walk on. Leave the high heels at home. Instead, pack sturdy walking sandals with good arch support or breathable, well-cushioned sneakers.
3. Modest Clothing for Churches
Remember that many churches in Rome (including St. Peter’s Basilica, the Pantheon, and countless others) have strict dress codes. Shoulders and knees must be covered. A great packing hack is to bring a lightweight scarf or pashmina in your day bag. You can quickly drape it over your shoulders before entering a church, allowing you to wear sleeveless tops outside in the heat.
4. Sun Protection and Hydration
The Mediterranean sun is intense. Pack a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality UV-blocking sunglasses, and plenty of reef-safe sunscreen. Additionally, bring a reusable water bottle. Rome is full of ‘nasoni’—free public drinking fountains that provide delicious, ice-cold water all day long.
