The Magic of Jewel Changi
For most travelers around the world, arriving at the airport is a stressful chore to be minimized as much as possible. In Singapore, it is the exact opposite. Changi Airport is routinely voted the best airport in the world, and its crown jewel—quite literally—is a massive entertainment and retail complex called ‘Jewel Changi’. Here is why you need to arrive at least 4 hours before your flight.
The HSBC Rain Vortex
The centerpiece of Jewel is the HSBC Rain Vortex. At 40 meters (130 feet) high, it is the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Water cascades down from the domed glass roof directly into the center of a lush, five-story indoor forest known as the Shiseido Forest Valley. Packing Tip: Have your camera easily accessible in your personal item! You will want to take dozens of photos before you even reach the check-in counters.
Canopy Park Attractions
Located at the topmost level of Jewel is the Canopy Park. It’s an incredible recreational wonderland featuring:
- Suspended bouncing nets that let you jump 8 meters above the ground
- A massive hedge maze and a mirror maze
- A glass-bottomed canopy bridge suspended 23 meters in the air Note: If you plan to bounce on the nets, wear comfortable pants/shorts and closed-toe sneakers. You will not be allowed on the nets in a skirt or heels!
Early Check-In Facilities
The beauty of Jewel is that you don’t need to drag your heavy luggage around while exploring. Changi offers an “Early Check-In” facility located right inside Jewel. Depending on your airline, you can drop off your checked bags up to 24 hours before your flight, leaving you completely unencumbered to shop, eat, and marvel at the waterfall.
Dining and Retail
Jewel boasts over 280 shops and restaurants. Whether you want a quick bite at Shake Shack, a Michelin-starred meal at Kam’s Roast, or to shop for last-minute souvenirs at Pokemon Center Singapore, Jewel has it all. It is fully air-conditioned, so you can comfortably wear your heavier “plane clothes” (like jeans and a sweater) while exploring.
