The Cobblestone Conundrum

Prague is often called the “City of a Hundred Spires,” but it could just as easily be called the “City of a Million Cobblestones.” The entire historical center (Staré Město, Malá Strana, and Hradčany) is paved with uneven, ancient stones. While they are undeniably romantic and photogenic, they are the absolute worst enemy of unprepared feet.

1. The Ban on Heels

Leave your stilettos and high heels at home. This is not a suggestion; it is a physical necessity. Narrow heels will get caught between the cobblestones, ruining your shoes and potentially causing a severely sprained ankle. Even if you are going to an upscale dinner or a performance at the National Theatre, you should wear elegant flats or very thick, low block heels.

2. Thick Soles are Mandatory

It’s not just about the type of shoe; it’s about the thickness of the sole. Thin-soled ballet flats or flimsy canvas sneakers (like cheap plimsolls) will allow you to feel every single sharp edge of every single stone. After 15,000 steps of walking around Prague Castle and the Charles Bridge, your feet will be bruised.

You need shoes with a thick, supportive rubber sole. High-quality walking sneakers (like Hoka, On Running, or thick-soled New Balance) are the best option for daytime exploring.

3. Beware the Wet Cobblestones

Prague gets a fair amount of rain, especially in the spring and autumn. When those ancient, polished cobblestones get wet, they turn into an ice rink. Your shoes must have good traction. Leather-soled dress shoes are extremely dangerous on wet cobblestones, particularly when walking down the steep hills from Prague Castle to the Lesser Town (Malá Strana).

4. The Night Out Exception

If you absolutely must wear heels for a specific event or a photoshoot, pack them in a tote bag. Wear your comfortable walking shoes while navigating the streets, and change into your heels once you arrive at the venue.
