Surviving Berlin Winters: A Packing Guide

Winter in Berlin is not for the faint of heart. Between December and February, the city transforms. The skies turn a perpetual shade of gray, temperatures frequently drop below freezing, and the notorious Berliner Wind cuts right through your clothes. To make matters worse, the sun usually sets before 4:00 PM. But with the right packing strategy, you can comfortably enjoy the city’s incredible museums, cozy cafes, and famous Christmas markets.

1. The Mighty Winter Coat

Do not skimp on your outerwear. A light jacket will not save you in January. You need a heavy, windproof, and water-resistant winter coat—ideally a long parka that covers your thighs. Berlin is a very casual city, so functionality always trumps high fashion when the temperatures drop. A solid, dark-colored puffer jacket is the unofficial winter uniform of the city.

2. Thermal Base Layers

The secret to staying warm while standing outside at a Christmas market for three hours is thermal underwear. Pack high-quality thermal leggings (to wear under your jeans) and long-sleeved thermal tops (like Uniqlo’s Heattech or merino wool base layers). This allows you to stay warm without looking incredibly bulky.

3. Protect Your Extremities

The freezing wind will immediately punish any exposed skin.

• Headwear: A thick woolen beanie (or Mütze) is essential.
• Scarf: Bring an oversized, thick scarf that you can wrap around your neck and pull up over your mouth and nose.
• Gloves: Leather or windproof synthetic gloves are much better than thin knit gloves, which the wind easily penetrates.

4. Footwear for Slush

Snow in Berlin often quickly turns into a gray, icy slush (Matsch). Canvas sneakers (like Converse) will soak through in minutes, leaving you miserable. Pack waterproof leather boots with a thick, grippy sole to prevent slipping on the ice. Pair them with thick wool socks.
