Shopping on Orchard Road
Spanning 2.2 kilometers, Orchard Road is Asia’s most famous shopping thoroughfare. It is flanked on both sides by gleaming mega-malls, luxury boutiques, and flagship stores. Whether you are hunting for haute couture or fast fashion bargains, navigating this massive retail district requires stamina and a solid packing strategy.
1. Comfortable Walking Shoes are Mandatory
You might be tempted to wear your most fashionable heels to browse the luxury boutiques in ION Orchard, but you will quickly regret it. You can easily clock 15,000 steps just walking from one end of the street to the other and navigating the multi-story malls. Pack your most comfortable, well-cushioned fashion sneakers or highly supportive flats.
2. Prepare for Extreme Temperature Shifts
Singapore is notorious for its “freezer malls.” While the outdoor temperature is a humid 32°C (90°F), the air conditioning inside the malls is often cranked down to 18°C (64°F). If you spend a few hours shopping, you will get very cold. Packing Tip: Always bring a lightweight cardigan, a denim jacket, or a large pashmina in your day bag. You will need it every time you step indoors.
3. The Reusable Tote Bag
While high-end boutiques will provide beautiful paper bags, many smaller stores and fast-fashion retailers in Singapore charge for plastic bags to promote environmental sustainability. Pack a foldable, reusable canvas tote bag in your daypack. Not only is it eco-friendly, but it’s much easier to carry on your shoulder than juggling multiple small plastic bags on the crowded sidewalks.
4. Don’t Forget Your Passport!
Singapore offers a Tourist Refund Scheme (TRS) which allows visitors to claim back the 9% Goods and Services Tax (GST) on purchases made at participating retail shops. To claim this tax refund, you must present your physical passport (or a digital copy, depending on the store’s system) at the point of sale. Keep your passport secure in a hidden money belt or a secure crossbody bag while shopping.
