Every April, Milan hosts the Salone del Mobile (Milan Furniture Fair), the largest and most prestigious furniture and design fair in the world. The entire city gets involved through “Fuorisalone”—a series of pop-up exhibitions, cocktail parties, and art installations spread across various districts (like Brera, Tortona, and Isola). It is exhausting, exhilarating, and requires military-level preparation.
1. Footwear is Your Lifeline
The main fairground (Fiera Milano in Rho) is incomprehensibly massive. You will easily walk over 20,000 steps a day just navigating the exhibition halls, and that is before you even return to the city center for the Fuorisalone events in the evening. Do not sacrifice comfort for style. You must wear heavily cushioned, supportive sneakers. Thankfully, the design crowd embraces a chic, minimalist sneaker (think New Balance, Salomon, or high-end trainers). Leave the leather loafers and heels at home; your feet will be destroyed by day two.
2. The Layering Strategy
April weather in Milan is highly unpredictable. You might start the morning shivering in the rain, sweat profusely in a crowded, unventilated exhibition hall at noon, and need a jacket again for outdoor courtyard parties in the evening. Layering is crucial. A light, breathable t-shirt under a thin sweater, topped with a stylish trench coat or a water-resistant technical jacket, allows you to adapt to the wildly fluctuating temperatures.
3. The Power Bank is Essential
Your phone is your map, your camera, your event ticket, and your only way to communicate with colleagues or friends in the chaotic crowds. Navigating between obscure Fuorisalone venues using Google Maps will drain your battery by 2:00 PM. Bring a high-capacity power bank and the correct charging cable. There is nowhere to plug in a wall charger on the exhibition floor.
4. The Oversized Tote Bag
You will collect an immense amount of physical material at the fair: glossy design catalogs, fabric swatches, business cards, and branded tote bags. Bring a sturdy, comfortable canvas tote bag or a stylish leather backpack. A small crossbody purse is entirely inadequate for carrying heavy catalogs all day.
