Prague Winter Magic: Packing for the Cold

December in Prague is purely magical. The Old Town Square is dominated by a massive, glittering Christmas tree, the smell of roasting chestnuts and trdelník (chimney cake) fills the air, and wooden huts sell warm mugs of svařák (mulled wine). However, experiencing this winter wonderland means standing outside in sub-zero temperatures for hours. Proper packing is the difference between making magical memories and hiding in your hotel room.

1. The “Base-Mid-Outer” Layering System

You cannot rely on just a heavy coat to keep you warm in Prague. The key is proper layering.

• Base Layer: Thermal underwear is essential. A long-sleeved thermal top and thermal leggings worn under your pants will trap your body heat. Merino wool is the gold standard here.
• Mid Layer: A thick, chunky knit sweater, a fleece pullover, or a wool cardigan. This layer provides insulation.
• Outer Layer: A windproof, waterproof, insulated winter coat. It should ideally be long enough to cover your thighs.

2. Double Up on Socks

Cobblestones transfer the freezing cold from the ground straight through the soles of your shoes. One pair of socks is rarely enough for wandering the Christmas markets. Wear a thin, moisture-wicking sock against your skin, followed by a thick pair of wool socks (like Smartwool or Alpaca wool). Make sure your winter boots have a little extra room to accommodate the extra bulk.

3. Protecting Your Extremities

• Gloves: Thin knit gloves are useless against the freezing wind. You need insulated, windproof gloves, ideally with touchscreen capabilities so you don’t have to take them off to snap a photo of the Astronomical Clock.
• Scarf: An oversized, thick scarf (like a blanket scarf) is necessary to protect your neck and to pull up over your face when the wind howls across the Charles Bridge.
• Hat: A fleece-lined beanie that covers your ears entirely.

4. Hand Warmers

For an extra boost of warmth, bring a multipack of disposable air-activated hand warmers (like HotHands). Keep one in each of your coat pockets. They stay hot for up to 10 hours and are a lifesaver when your fingers are numb from taking photos in the freezing cold.
