Navigating the Grand Bazaar

The Grand Bazaar in Istanbul is one of the oldest and largest covered markets in the world. With over 4,000 shops spread across 61 covered streets, it is a chaotic, sensory-overloading labyrinth. You will get lost, and that is entirely part of the fun. Here is how to pack and prepare for a day of intense shopping.

1. Pack an Extra (Empty) Duffel Bag

You will likely arrive in Istanbul swearing that you aren’t going to buy anything bulky. You will likely leave Istanbul with three kilim rugs, four decorative ceramic bowls, and a dozen boxes of Turkish delight. Always pack a foldable, lightweight duffel bag inside your main suitcase. When it’s time to fly home, you can fill this duffel with your dirty clothes (which aren’t fragile) and use your hard-shell suitcase to protect your new Turkish ceramics and fragile souvenirs.

2. Dress Comfortably but Conservatively

The Grand Bazaar is vast. You will easily walk several miles just wandering through its corridors. Wear your most comfortable walking shoes. Because the bazaar is quite historic and culturally traditional, it is polite to dress somewhat conservatively. Avoid overly revealing clothing (like short shorts or crop tops). A comfortable pair of jeans or a maxi dress is ideal.

3. The Art of Turkish Haggling

Haggling is an expected and respected part of the shopping experience in the Grand Bazaar.

• Never accept the first price: The initial price quoted to a tourist is often inflated by 30-50%.
• The Apple Tea Ritual: If a shopkeeper invites you to sit down and offers you a small glass of hot apple tea, accept it! It is a sign of hospitality. It does not legally bind you to buy anything, but it signifies that you are open to starting a negotiation.
• Walk Away: If the price is still too high, politely say thank you and walk away. They will almost always call you back with a significantly lower counter-offer.

4. How to Carry Your Cash

While many shops in the Grand Bazaar now accept credit cards, cash (Turkish Lira) is still king and will often get you a much better discount. However, the crowded corridors are prime real estate for pickpockets. Keep your cash in a secure crossbody bag that rests in front of your body, and never keep your wallet in your back pocket.
