Modest Fashion in Dubai

Dubai is an incredibly modern and cosmopolitan city, home to millions of expats from around the globe. While the dress code is significantly more relaxed here than in neighboring emirates (like Sharjah) or countries (like Saudi Arabia), it is still an Islamic country with deeply rooted cultural traditions. Dressing appropriately is a sign of respect and will ensure you don’t attract unwanted attention.

The General Rule of Thumb

As a tourist, you will not be forced to cover your hair (unless entering a mosque), nor do you need to cover yourself from head to toe. The general rule for public spaces—such as shopping malls, souks, the metro, and public streets—is to cover your shoulders and your knees.

Avoid wearing overly revealing clothing, such as crop tops, plunging necklines, sheer fabrics, or short shorts in these public areas.

Heat-Friendly Modest Options

Staying covered up in 45°C (113°F) heat might sound miserable, but it is entirely manageable if you pack the right fabrics.

• Maxi Dresses: A lightweight, flowing maxi dress made of natural cotton or linen is the ultimate Dubai outfit. It looks incredibly elegant in upscale restaurants while adhering to the modesty guidelines.
• Linen Trousers: Wide-leg linen pants paired with a loose, short-sleeved blouse are chic, breathable, and perfect for exploring the Gold Souk.
• Kimonos and Cardigans: If you want to wear a sleeveless top or a camisole, bring a lightweight, patterned kimono or a thin cardigan to drape over your shoulders while indoors.

The Exceptions: Beaches and Clubs

The modesty rules are relaxed in private resorts, beach clubs, and hotel swimming pools.

• Bikinis: Wearing a bikini or a standard swimsuit at a hotel pool or a private beach club (like Zero Gravity or Nikki Beach) is entirely acceptable. However, you must cover up when you leave the pool area to walk through the hotel lobby.
• Nightclubs: Dubai’s nightlife is famously glitzy. In nightclubs and upscale bars, the dress code shifts dramatically. Short dresses, heels, and glamorous outfits are the norm here.

The Mall Freeze

Dubai’s massive shopping malls (like the Dubai Mall and Mall of the Emirates) are heavily air-conditioned. While it might be scorching outside, you will quickly find yourself shivering inside. Always keep a pashmina or a light sweater in your bag when going shopping.
