Istanbul Ferry Travel Tips
Istanbul is uniquely situated across two continents: Europe and Asia. While there are underwater tunnels and massive suspension bridges connecting the two sides, taking a public ferry across the Bosphorus Strait is an absolute must-do. It’s cheap, avoids the notorious Istanbul traffic, and offers some of the most spectacular views in the world.
1. Pack a Windbreaker (Even in Summer)
Riding the ferry on the outdoor deck is the best way to experience the Bosphorus. You get to watch the seagulls fly alongside the boat and see the magnificent palaces along the shoreline. However, the wind whipping down the strait is incredibly strong. Even if it is 30°C (86°F) and sunny on land, you will feel chilly on the open deck of a moving ferry. Always keep a lightweight windbreaker or a denim jacket in your day bag for the crossing.
2. Bring Small Change for Tea and Simit
Ferry rides are meant to be enjoyed like a local. Men with silver trays will walk up and down the decks selling small tulip-shaped glasses of hot black tea (çay) for a few Liras. You should also buy a simit (a circular bread encrusted with sesame seeds) before boarding. Pro-tip: Buy two simits. Eat one with your tea, and tear the other into small pieces to throw to the seagulls that follow the ferry. You need small coins to buy the tea, so break your large bills beforehand.
3. The Istanbulkart is Essential
Do not buy single-use tokens. As soon as you arrive in Istanbul, buy an Istanbulkart (a rechargeable transit card) from a yellow kiosk. You can use this single card to ride the ferries, the metro, the trams, and the buses. It provides a heavily discounted fare compared to buying individual tickets.
4. Timing the Sunset Crossing
For the most magical experience, time your ferry ride from the Asian side (Kadiköy or Üsküdar) back to the European side (Eminönü or Karaköy) exactly at sunset. The silhouette of the mosques against the glowing orange sky is the defining image of Istanbul. Arrive at the ferry terminal 15 minutes early to secure a seat on the outside deck facing west.
