Hiking Dragon’s Back

Most people picture Hong Kong as a dense concrete jungle of skyscrapers. However, over 70% of the territory is actually composed of mountains and sprawling country parks. Hiking is a massively popular weekend activity for locals. The most famous and accessible trail is Dragon’s Back, offering stunning ridge-line views of the South China Sea. Before you hop on the bus to the trailhead, you need to pack properly.

1. Footwear for Rough Terrain

Dragon’s Back is not a paved path. It involves uneven dirt tracks, rocky steps, and areas of loose gravel. While you do not need heavy-duty alpine hiking boots, a sturdy pair of trail running shoes or hiking sneakers is essential. Attempting the hike in thin-soled lifestyle sneakers (like Converse) or sandals will lead to twisted ankles and sore feet.

2. The Hydration Equation

Hiking in Hong Kong’s humidity is incredibly taxing on the body. You will sweat out water faster than you think.

  • You must carry a minimum of 2 liters of water per person.
  • There are no convenience stores or water fountains along the actual trail. You must buy your water in the city before you catch the bus to the trailhead.
  • Packing electrolyte powder packets to add to your water is highly recommended to prevent cramping.

3. Serious Sun Protection

For the majority of the Dragon’s Back ridge, you are completely exposed to the sun with zero tree cover.

  • Wear a wide-brimmed hiking hat that covers your neck.
  • Apply high-SPF, sweat-resistant sports sunscreen before you start, and reapply at the viewing platform halfway through.
  • Sunglasses are mandatory to prevent eye strain from the bright sun reflecting off the ocean below.

4. The Mosquito Defense

As you descend from the ridge towards Big Wave Bay (the end of the trail), you will enter denser, shaded vegetation. This is where the mosquitoes thrive. Pack a travel-sized bottle of strong insect repellent containing DEET or Picaridin. Spray your ankles, legs, and arms just before you begin the descent.

5. Swimwear for the Finish Line

The best part of the Dragon’s Back hike is that it ends at Big Wave Bay, a beautiful surfing beach. Pack a swimsuit and a lightweight microfiber towel in your daypack. After sweating on the trail for three hours, diving into the ocean and grabbing a cold beer from a beachside kiosk is the ultimate reward.
