Cracking the Berghain Dress Code

Berlin is the undisputed techno capital of the world, and Berghain is its most famous temple. Known for having the strictest door policy in the world, getting past the bouncers (specifically the legendary Sven Marquardt) is notoriously difficult. While there is no guaranteed formula for getting in, your outfit plays a massive role.

1. Black is the New Black

If there is one universal rule for Berlin clubbing, it’s this: wear black. Avoid bright colors, prominent designer logos, or anything that looks too “try-hard” or mainstream. The aesthetic is industrial, minimalistic, and edgy. A simple, well-fitted black t-shirt or a black mesh top paired with black denim is a very solid starting point.

2. Prioritize Comfort (You’ll Be Here A While)

Berghain isn’t a club you visit for two hours; people often stay for 12 to 24 hours straight. Comfort is paramount.

  • Footwear: Do not wear heels or dress shoes. You will be rejected immediately. Wear comfortable, broken-in sneakers or heavy combat boots (like Dr. Martens).
  • Layers: It is freezing outside in the queue and boiling inside the club. Bring a warm, dark coat that you can immediately check into the cloakroom.

3. Embrace Leather, Harnesses, and Mesh

Berghain has its roots in fetish and underground queer culture. If you feel comfortable doing so, incorporating subtle fetish wear into your outfit—such as a leather harness, a fishnet top, or heavy chains—is highly encouraged and fits perfectly with the club’s vibe.

4. The Attitude

Your outfit won’t matter if your attitude is wrong. The bouncers are looking for people who are there for the music and the freedom, not for Instagram photos (which are strictly forbidden inside). Don’t look at your phone in the queue, don’t talk loudly in large groups, and when you reach the door, be polite and speak German if you can.
