Biking in Amsterdam: Essential Gear
With more bikes than people, Amsterdam is undeniably the cycling capital of the world. Renting a bike is the most authentic and efficient way to see the city. But if you want to cycle comfortably and safely, you need to wear the right gear.
Comfort is Key
You don’t need professional cycling gear—you won’t see locals wearing spandex on their commute! However, you do need clothing that allows for movement.
- Stretchy Bottoms: Avoid rigid denim. Opt for jeans with elastane, comfortable chinos, or athletic-inspired trousers. If you’re wearing a skirt or dress, make sure it’s not too long and flowing, as it can easily get caught in the spokes.
- Breathable Tops: Cycling, even at a leisurely pace, can warm you up quickly. Wear a breathable base layer so you don’t arrive at your destination dripping in sweat.
Rain Gear for Cyclists
In Amsterdam, it’s not a question of if it will rain while you’re biking, but when.
- The Rain Suit (Regenpak): If you want to go full Dutch, buy a two-piece rain suit. They aren’t the most glamorous, but they keep you completely dry.
- The Long Raincoat: A raincoat that falls past your hips is great for keeping your upper legs dry while pedaling.
Bag Management
Do not try to cycle while balancing a heavy tote bag on one shoulder.
- A Small Backpack: A compact, waterproof backpack is ideal for carrying your daily essentials while keeping your hands free for steering and signaling.
- Use the Basket: If your rental bike has a front basket or a back rack with straps (snelbinders), use them! It’s much more comfortable than having a sweaty back.
